USB to RS232 Converter for ISI Scan

I recommended in other post, the USB to Serial RS232 Belkin Converter, for ISI Scan users who change their computer and it has not a RS232 port to connect their instruments like NIR5000. We have tested that this adapter works fine and it can be get from Amazon.

Shootout 2016 files and rules, available to download

You can download the files to play, work or participate in the:
 "2016 Shootout".
Spectra data is in Excel, so you can use R, Excel (remember the good book about Chemometrics in Excel from Alexey L. Pomerantsev), Win ISI,  or any other software working with tools to import it from Excel or CSV to this softwares.

Resemble Package 1.2.2 available for downloading

Resemble package version 1.2.2 is available for downloading from CRAN.
You can get also the Reference Manual.
After you have the ZIP file in your PC, select in R-Studio: Install Packages:
It requires that R be updated to 3.2.2 or higher.
I have updated just now so I will continue the tutorials with this version which solves some bugs from the previous one.

Jornadas Nutega 2014

IDRC Shootout 2014 rules and files ready

The IDRC 2014 will take place at Chambersburg form 2 to 8th of August this year, and you can consult the program here .
I always like to download the files available for one of the interesting parts of the conference: "The Shootout Challenge".
Thanks to the IDRC, to put the data files in their webpage in different formats for downloading (Excel, csv, Matlab,Unscrambler and JDX.
More information about the Conference is available at:
The Council For Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: IDCR 2014

These are the spectra on the CAL Data Set 1 imported into R:
We can see a zone with very sharp peaks which we can amplify to see more clearly the bands:
We have to check in a plot appart the other zone, to check better the bands there:
Shootout rules say that the spectra include the NIR and IR apectra , and:
"The samples correspond to oils from petroleum reservoirs around the world. These particular spectra were collected in the laboratory at various conditions of pressures and temperatures, in transmittance, using a high pressure flow cell. It should be noted that as pressure and temperature change, so does the effective path length and the density of the fluid. The nominal path length was 1 mm. The temperature and pressure at which the spectra were acquired are provided, and the path length can be calculated using the equation:
d (mm) = 0.8801 + 0.000402065 × T(Kelvin) + 0.00060493 × P(MPa)
Note that in the dataset, the temperatures are in degree C and pressures in psi".

It is clear that the pressure and temperature affect the efective pathlength, so this can be the reason we see different groups of spectra.
The rules also say:

"While most spectra represent mixtures, some pure components are provided, but not identified as such. No pure components are present in the test and validation sets".

So it is also important to detect these pure components.

Chemometrics in Excel (New Book)

I have ordered this book, and still have to wait some time for it, but I am sure that it will serve as inspiration for future posts in this blog.
I´m sure that this book will be very useful for a lot of students and people interested in Chemometrics, because is written by a good chemometrician and Excel developper:

Alexey L Pomerantsev is a Leading Researcher at The Russian Academy of Science. He is a founding member and Chair of the Russian Chemometrics Society, being instrumental in organizing the annual Winter Symposium on Chemometrics. He is a peer reviewer and member of Editorial Board of the Journal ‘Chemometrics and Intelligent Laboratory Systems.’ Dr. Pomerantsev has over 100 publications, many of them dealing with Chemometric Investigations.

You can see some tutorials here.

"II Jornada NIR" - Trouw Nutrition - Masterlab

Shootout 2012 files

Visit the shootout-2012 webpage, to get the files and practice chemometrics with softwares like Unscrambler, Vision, Matlab, WinISI,...
Data is also in ASCII format so we can import it into programs like R.
This is a tradicional event of the IDRC (International Diffuse Reflectance Conference), which takes place every two years al Chambersburg - Pennsylvania (USA).
Participants work with the data in order to get the better statistic and originals approachs. This year the data is spectra of pharmaceutical tablets.
Participants get a Training Set, a Test Set (with Lab data), and a Validation Set without lab data and a Validation Set without Lab values.
After the model was created, validation file is predicted and the results send to shootout chair for evaluation with a presentation of the approach used.
